A Lone New York Sheriff Signs Up to Aid Immigration Crackdown

This NY Times article is about a sheriff from Rennselaer County in New York named Patrick Russo. He "became one of only 75 in the country to sign an agreement allowing corrections officers to perform the functions of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, as part of a program known as 287(g)." What this means is ICE will train him and a few of his deputies to properly identify, interrogate, and turn verified illegal immigrants over to ICE. These immigrants can only be sent over if an officer from either the county or state department has arrested them for a criminal charge. An official spokesperson from ICE said this decision of the county sheriff department will enhance public safety.
